Humans Are Smart Devices, but Not Programmable: Incentive-centered Design for Security

چکیده

The thing is, the motivations matter. For one thing, it’s why the bad guys keep coming, and why they expend (sometimes very considerable) resources to climb over or dig under or unhinge the gates. And there is the first fundamental design design principle that comes from paying attention to incentives: the amount we pay Bob to build the wall higher (the gate thicker, the moat deeper) should depend on how motivated Eve is to get inside: how many resources will he throw against us? Is it really Hannibal ad portas?

Incentive-Centered Design for Information Security

Humans are “smart components” in a system, but cannot be directly programmed to perform; rather, their autonomy must be respected as a design constraint and incentives provided to induce desired behavior. Sometimes these incentives are properly aligned, and the humans don’t represent a vulnerability. But often, a misalignment of incentives causes a weakness in the system that can be exploited b...

An Incentive-Aware Lightweight Secure Data Sharing Scheme for D2D Communication in 5G Cellular Networks

Due to the explosion of smart devices, data traffic over cellular networks has seen an exponential rise in recent years. This increase in mobile data traffic has caused an immediate need for offloading traffic from operators. Device-to-Device(D2D) communication is a promising solution to boost the capacity of cellular networks and alleviate the heavy burden on backhaul links. However, dir...

Secure FPGA Design by Filling Unused Spaces

Nowadays there are different kinds of attacks on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). As FPGAs are used in many different applications, its security becomes an important concern, especially in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Hardware Trojan Horse (HTH) insertion is one of the major security threats that can be implemented in unused space of the FPGA. This unused space is unavoidable to ...

User-centered priority setting for accessible devices and applications

Currently, ICT applications and devices like 'smart glasses', are hitting the consumer market. These devices offer great potential for people with disabilities, such as the visually impaired, but only when they are accessible for all users. This study comprehends a user-centered design process thoroughly analysing the needs and priorities of the prospective users. In order to assess the possibi...
